June 30, 1952, Newport, RI. I was only 5 years old when the Ringling show set up on a lot that was walking distance from our home. I remember bits and pieces of the set up and the show. |

When the show played Beloit that year, I got the honor of walking one of the downtown routes with Eddie Jackson. We started with breakfast in a small cafe about a block from the bill car and Eddie insisted that cantelope ala mode was a great way to start the day.
He was an expert putting the bills up straight in the windows using the poles and likum stickers to position them.
At 14, I had little knowledge of what an honor I was given.
Wish they had battery operated tape recorders back then. The jackpots were something else.

Also, the date was Sept. 1 I have no idea of how many times my dad and I heard the Sept. 1 joke.

Christ Jimmy, I had no idea you went back that far!
Have you caught up on the latest AARP offer?
Bob,
Eddie was also a very good photographer.
I wish you would share some of his stories with us fans.
Those likum stickers sure did a great job.
Many years ago while in Texas me and Pete Holmes were picking up Carson and Barnes posters after the date.
I heard Pete calling come here quick.
Hell, I thought he was bitten by a snake.
He found in a window part of an old Al G. Kelly and Miller Bros poster still there.
Many old collectors did not know the right way to pull posters with stickers on them as many corners are missing on those posters.
Harry in Texas
Speaking of AARP, some time ago they offered a lifetime membership, but I couldn't afford it then. Dumb!!!
Harry,
At 14, I didn't remember anything except how he sweet talked some of the store owners into posting bills, pointing out that they would be way at the top of their windows and would not interfere
with their window displays. In addition, they would receive 2 passes.
At the end of the route, he threw all the preprinted passes in the river when we crossed a bridge.

Hello Harry, it was in Longview Texas if I remember correctly. Date sheets were misspelled as Lingview? The kelly-miller paper had to to 15-20 years old at the time in that empty store.
The lot had a slight incline and there was a slight mist which created some slick mud, the semis with the donnikers couldn't make it so they had an elephant push from behind and quess what they had no re-inforcement on the back.
As far as I know they never did try to pound out the dents.
Also that was before we had so many regulations to keep our water clean, so the honey wagon was sent to nearby a manhole for storm water and dumped there.
Times have sure changed.
