Wearing Blaney’s white outfit, Smiley uses a pole to torment Sultan so that the lion will become conditioned to attack anyone dressed in white.

Some writer picked up on an element of truth here. At Jungleland, we had a former gun boy whose drunken jealousy included this among his more treacherous pursuits. When the four Compound tigers were headed to Howard Suesz, this gun boy first thought he was going with them, but when Trevor Bale told Suesz about him, he quickly discovered he was out. To insure, in his mind, that no one else could handle them, he went in at night and attacked the tigers in the cageline with six-foot poles--from the outside, of course. Once he knew he had been seen, he hid out until one midnight with hastily scrounged money, he stole aboard a southbound Greyhound and lammed it out of town. A true story, 20 years after this movie. Who can guess who I'm talking about?
