This photo came to me from Alan Rost of the Jacksonville zoo. Its only identification is "Jacksonville, 1961.
I think this is Diano's Tommy with the African female Nackatella in the background. They look to be inside a rail car and not a semi-trailer. What would have been the circumstances? Who is the man? There looks to be a title on the side of the vehicle above the man's head. Can any readers provide information?

While this appears to be a railcar, Richard asked several of us if we knew the circumstances surrounding the 1961 RBBB tour of South America. The Diano elephants were among that entourage.

Does anyone know where the left port? Jacksonville maybe? Miami? How were the animals contained on the ship? As Richard pointed out, there hasn't been much documentation recorded about this journey.

A Big Tommy question. Is there any way to predict the future size of a young elephant when it reaches maturity?
Was young Tommy on the road to fame?

Looks like a Pennsylvania Railroad car

Back in the days when baggage cars were frequently used to haul elephants my Dad said that they always would ask to get a Pennsylvania Baloon type car because of its height to accomodate the full grown elephants. The various railroads with enough time would make one available. johnny
