It's a South American water rat

the size of a small house cat

Jenny Vidbel also has a porcupine

Her 3 horses offer the best of

the traditional in the show John

Its the Worlds Largest Rodent...can weigh more than 100lbs...

In the Show World its billed as the "Giant Rat" or "Giant Killer Rat"...I prefer the Nutria..

The Late Mark Pierson was once angrily asked "Why dat Rat be named Tyrone?"...which Mark replied "cause Leroy was already taken"..needless to say the fella accepted Marks explanation, purchased a ticket, and went in...

And they taste just like chicken!

Chic,
Do you have a photo of your small house cat?
Cappies can get up to 150 pounds and are hell to catch. They can run damn fast. Got to round up a half a dozen at a park we worked at a few years ago.
Was a real hoot.

Right on Jimmie. Also, a nutria and capybara are two different critters. Nutrias are running around the South.
They remind you of a muskrat.

A guick google of the two will show and tell you more than you want to know.

I am afraid and repulsed [guess thats the word] by any mouse or rat or snake for that matter and cannot understand with all the beautiful animals in the world, having a big rat in the circus ring. My uncle had a Giant Rat pit show after the war, inferring that it chewed soldiers feet in foxholes and had disgusting banner that turned the suckers. A porcupine would be similar to a rat or snake. All good "pit Show" dings, but come on. What in hell can these animals be trained to do. Pretty far out for music. "talk to the animals" I think I will have to pass. Over the years I have turned down offers to train pigs. So be it. I am glad I will be unable to see this years Big Apple "Pit show"

Chic, If three horses make up the best of traditional in the prestigious Big Apple circus our industry is in deep xxxx.

I am amazed that Buckles Blog is spending valuable comment time on such crap. Lets talk more about the Richters, Zoppes, etc.

I note Jenny Vidbel is trainer of rat and prkpne. What if that rat was captured by Olyd Tyme Circus on one of those New Joisey ghetto town circus lots. Where else could you get one and who in hell would even want one in the first place.I never cared for those Russian cat and mouse-rat acts passover on a tight rope. yuuck What tricks does this capabara do? Do they announce it or leave the public in doubt?tanglefoot. PS with the laTE NOTERIETY maybe someone will outdo Flea Circuses with Bed bug act. They have always been available in coaches and sleepers. I think I am going nuts.

John my note about the 3 horses

was meant to show my disdain

This edition of Big Apple seems

to be a very sad & the thinnest

lineup ever (& maybe the last)

Next year's sales are often

determined by this year's show

"Scavengers of the Battle Fields - Giant Killers Rats". I remember working for Dick Johnson and Don Gillette helping them set up their rat show in the 60's. I also think I knew Tanglefoot's uncle or cousin with the rat show. They wintered in Dallas years ago.
And now to our group of Grumpy Old Men and alleged non Grumpy Old Men bloggers;I have seen a grind show made with only a giant horse and can you believe it, they also take a giant horse and a little horsey and put them in a circus ring and pass it off as an act, AKA a big and little. Yes Yes it is true. Never the less I find the novelty of this big and little act quite interesting and entertaining. This type act, I do not feel, will have names of the like's of the Schuman's or the Knie's losing any sleep. It is apparent that a lot of youngen's and old folk have never seen or heard of a capabara. The main thing a big and little act has going for it, is the novelty factor, same with the capabara. Not so much as having them cutting a full twisting back flip.
PS: On the lighter side of things, I do agree; It is quite apparent the circus industry like a lot of other industries sure has its share of rats and venomous snakes readily available for exhibition.
As the man said, "Step Right Up" it's
"Educational and also Entertaining"
