It helped being the daughter of circus owners Ben and Eva Davenport. Besides, what good show publicist of that era was going to let facts get in the way of a good hype job? And newspapers eagerly printed any circus release no matter how the truth was bent as long as it was accompanied by an ad. But in all fairness, if anybody earned his or her keep working with elephants, it was Norma, even though she professed that, early on, she was scared of them.
