Isn't this Felix
Felix Adler, of course. I think Paul Jung set it up, but one year the clowns did a lot of commercial stuff and Felix was on the wagon like most of the clowns. Jackie LeClaire
JACKIE: Maybe you can address this. Here is Felix with Jell-O, and some of us recall other clowns working the circus version of "product placement". One clown was a jar of French's mustard, another was a pack of chewing gum. There were grumblings over the years that the show got paid for these walk-around advertisements, but the clowns wearing famous logos never saw a dime. Is that the case?
In the 1950's there was a radio/TV personality named Henry Morgan who reviewed the Ringling Show and wrote, "When I was a kid I used to watch the clowns and fall down laughing. Last night after watching them walk around doing commercials I just fall down."
He later appeared in a few movies and his temporary fame was such that the long time character actor Henry Morgan we remember from M.A.S.H. changed his name to Harry.
I remember them talking about that they were difinatly paid for what they did. Paul Jung could have never pulled that off other wise. These clowns were not First of Mays and would not have gone for it. They worked together but all had egos and stood their ground. They were paid in dollars, but a few extra bucks around a show is great. Like when we did Cherry Pie. I would imagine knowing that group that the grumblings were because they did not think they got paid enough, but they did get paid. Jackie LeClaire
