From Jerry Digney #1

A rare ad for legendary circus NY opening 1955 with Marilyn. first time I've seen it--a stellar star line up for charity. Later on RBBB invited stars for L.A. charity opening.

Circus charity events, raising funds for the needy, the displaced, the cold, the hungry, and so on started in the time of John Bill Ricketts. Initially it was simply members of the troupe, and the proprietor, pledging the fruits of their labors in a performance to the cause.

Learning when the first "star" from outside the circus made a special appearance to augment the regular bill would take some searching.

There were also times when the owner and the troupe artists took their own "benefit," whereby the audience could attend and express appreciation for their individual efforts. It was a practice lifted from the theater.
