The famed Cole Bros. Palomino liberty horses for many years. Lots of fine horse trainers would present them [12] over the years and I had the privelege as a young 23 yr. old to present them alone in the center ring on the Orrin Davenport Shrine dates [Detroit, Clevland] and on a number of Barnes-Carruthers fair dates and later when they were sold with other elephants, liberty horses and ponies to the big King Bros. circus. In 54 some 7 of them were killed or had to be shot when the horse truck brakes failed and crashed going down a mountain into Oil City, PA. The novice driver and four grooms up in the crumby also died. The gear box was found to be in high gear after the wreck inspection. A very sad time.

Feature in the acts was fighting horse "Smokey the lion hearted" [harry thomas ann.] and Jocko the pony who did a thread the needle routine as the horses ran two abreast. Afine top notch liberty act and Paul nNelson and my dad would frequently present them on horseback on a nice palomino quarter horse.john herriott
