While Clyde is contending with the tiger, there are frequent cutaways to concerned onlookers, such as these two clowns. (Are these actual Beatty Circus clowns?)

Yes, Eddie Dullam on the left and Larence Cross on the right.
I wonder if they were paid union scale? Chic, what do you think?
SAG minimum for "extras" in those
days probably didn't mean much
By the way it was Mother Dullom
During the making of TGSOE, DeMille was able to get a special waiver from the Screen Actors Guild so that he could use actual circus people in minor roles and as extras. I seem to recall reading that if a performer appeared on screen doing their regular act, they didn’t have to be paid. If they did special material, like appearing in dramatic scenes and/or speaking a few lines, they were paid Guild minimum. No doubt John Wayne was able to get a similar waiver for RING OF FEAR. With all the movie work he did, Clyde Beatty was probably already a member of the Guild.
Chic ...
Did you know "Mother Dullam"? If so, I would be interested in hearing more about his life. I met him several times as a kid when the Beatty show played my home town. Interesting character!

On several occasions I helped
Eddie "Mother" Dullom (with an O)
paint ad banners for inside the
top as cherry pie & got know him
as an acquaintance only
He & Glenn "Seacow" Hart were my
very favorite pair that ever did
the washwomen gag but my close
friends from that alley included
Billy McCabe & Kenny Dodd who
remains my very best friend
For several years my cousin Mike
Bourbon was also clowning there
Eddie told me he and Lawrence Cross were the only two clowns featured enough to be recognized. As in this shot, they were given a few medium to close shots, and were instructed not to do ANYTHING, just be in the shot. So they stood like dummies with their scene with Emmett Lynn, and when cut to in the escape sequence, they just looked on totally dead-pan.
Chic,
Dad had some great stories of him working with Mike Bourbon, Mother Dullom, Billy McCabe and other on CBCB.
The 60s & 70s were really great
years on the Beatty Show as were
the 70s & 80s on Big Bertha
My 1st year (or 2) on Beatty was
a pretty steep learning curve
but led to much opportunity
