Dennis, You got the accentuating his size part right. That's for the show. A fighting lion is brought up high to unbalance him thus slowing him down. A lot safer then fighting him on the ground where he has a good chance of taking your legs out from under you and knocking you down. It doesn't look as dangerous to the suckers when they are down on all four's, as it does when they are on their hind legs. Up high is a win win in a showman's book. Less dangerous and looks great.
