Lunch Wagons #1 (From Eric Beheim)

Closely related to popcorn wagons are lunch wagons, the first purveyors of what we now call fast food. Lunch wagons first began to appear after the Civil War and catered primarily to late-night workers and carousers who couldn’t find restaurants that were still open. The bill of fare usually consisted of sandwiches, boiled eggs, pies and coffee.

Every railroad circus under canvas down tgru the years always had a show owned "pie car" or "privelege car" It was like a diner on wheels and served food after the show down on the tracks. bEHIND THE COUNTER and a back bar the Pie car food manager would get fresh pies in each town and display them. Lots of people would come down from the coaches and get a piece or so and coffee and take back to their birth or stateroom. Only for bosses and performers. Working men had a small version in their coaches area. both served booze as well.Once the train moveed it became the "privelege car" with one armed bandits, crap and poker, showed owned and for circus personnel only. "pie car" was only for the show people. When Feld put a wagon in the back yard area serving food, no booze, It was operated by the train "pie car" people generally and was called "pie car Jr." and only for show personnel. Soon after Feld took over show booze and gambling were eliminated. During thos "old Days" Dookie" books could be used instead of money but thats another story. C and B has had a pretty elaborate Pie Car on a semi trailer that is quite popular' Johnny
