July Fourth 1901 was the second day in Pittsburgh of a two-day stand for the Ringling show and the route book reported “Weather very hot, with thunder showers during the day. … the veteran showman, George Cole, spent the Fourth with us. Two packed house and the side shows had all they could accommodate. Elaborate dinners were served at the cook tent by Allie Webb, and at the dining car by William Fay. The following were the menus offered by the Ringling Brothers to their employees: [both are listed in full detail]. Sid Ruben, manager of the privilege car, spread himself in the way of decorations.” This is the embossed cover of the 8-page souvenir menu booklet, complete with its original ribbon tie, distributed to employees at the Thursday dinner 110 years ago. Happy Fourth of July to all!
