A segment of History Detectives on PBS, Tampa station Channel 3, showing it at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, will talk about some mystery on Ronald McDonald's costume. Hazel, Mike Coco's wife flew to NYC to do an interview with some costuming to do an interview on this program. I do not know the details, but some of you might be interested. It will be broadcasted nationally but you will have to check the tv guides for showing in your particular area. Love to you all, Jackie LeClaire |

I wonder if this has been cleared with Frank Curry who owns all rights to Ronald McDonald (ie) costumes, etc.
Maybe Frank can clear this up:
I had the impression that Mike was given first shot at playing Ronald but would have had to change his makeup so turned it down.
Mike was approached by McDonald's to re-design the "look" of Ronald McDonald. TV weatherman, Willard Scott first played Ronald in TV commercials with a dixie cup for a nose and a tray of french fries on his head as a hat. Not the image the big McDonalds wanted, so they got Mike to redesign the make-up & wardrobe to basically the one we all see today. Mike played Ronald in the first few national commercials, along with Duane Thorpe as another character, Mr. Muscle. There will be some clips of Mike and Duane's TV commercials on the History Channel show, as well as a few photo's we provided from the Clown Hall of Fame. The best part will be so see Hazel tell the Polokovs part of this interesting story.

TO BUCKLES AND "OLE WHITEY"!
Sorry I am so late to "Buckles Web Log" today. It has been a long day.
Thank you Buckles and "Ole Whitey" for their kind thoughts! And Greg for the historical overview.
I created and first produced the RONALD MCDONALD CIRCUS in 1982 in Montreal.
We toured 28 towns in Quebec and part of Ontario, under the Big Top.
In 1986, we opened in the USA, in Arenas.
Fortunately, years prior to that, the names RONALD MCDONALD, HAMBURGLAR, GRIMACE, BIRDIE, ETC., and their costumes were well known!
I starred all the characters in clown gags, magic acts and the CIRCUS' production numbers!
On a different CIRCUS that I put on, we had the proud pleasure to present Mike, his son, and grandson performing the great "Paint The Statue" act.
Annually, Mike and Hazel, and sometimes their kin, would help me with my novelties, as would another memorable clown, Joe Sherman!
As a point of interest, Lloyd Morgan's daughter dyed the first
RONALD MCDONALD wig.
I sure missed it. Too bad. Would like to know what it was all about.johnny
Frank: I think it may be the older son (was his name Graham?) you are talking about if this was awhile back. His younger son by Hazel did work some with his dad as "Coconut."
I watched the TV show last night. It was good to see Hazel after all these years. I'm glad she kept the Ronald costume; from the previews I was afraid that is what had been found in a locker.
The pbs channel will repeat this show a couple of times during the week. Just check the local guide and copy it.
TO "JOHNNY",
You can Google, Historical Detectives/Ronald McDonald costumes.
Once you are at their website, you can view the entire TV program. The specific segment is minutes "37 to 52".
