For most of 1941, the United States was not officially involved in the war in Europe, which had been going on since 1939. Even so, the U.S. Army was being greatly expanded via the recently reinstated draft. During Ringling’s 1941 season, military representatives were frequent visitors to the show to observe how it was able to serve an average of 3600 hot meals a day while traveling on a daily basis. After America’s entry into the war, many of the Circus’ cook house procedures were adopted by U.S. Army field kitchens.
