This is a great example of one of the "process shots" that Eric mentioned earlier. The shot of the train and the waving performers is projected on a screen behind the priest and the alter boys. ~frank
I think that this is the real thing, since the "blessing of the circus train" was a Sarasota tradition. (Had DeMille done this in Hollywood, he would probably have used someone like Barry Fitzgerald or Pat O'Brien, who were frequently cast as priests.)
This is Monsignor C. L. Elslander, pastor of St. Martha's Catholic Church in Sarasota from 1927 until his retirement in 1968. St. Martha's is located at 200 North Orange Avenue. The old Winter Quarters, at Fruitville and Oriente, was located inside St. Martha's parish.
Chris:
Thanks for giving the address for Winter Quarters.
I want to stop by the area the next time in Sarasota. Anybody know what's on the property now?
I agree with ERIC. This is Father Elslander, pastor of St. Martha's in Sarasota, who was another non-actor given a line. When Brad asked him to pour on the blessings for what promised to be a challenging season, Father said, "Of course, Brad."
I see Jimmy Armstrong, at the bottom of the left door, chose not to wear his makeup for the dukey run to the Garden. And I believe I'm seeing Charlie Moroski.
Who can ID the other showfolks waving goodbye?
That is, indeed, Charles Moroski. I have looked at this shot a million times and just now recognize him. In this particular shot that is.
