Thanks to a special waiver from the Screen Actors Guild, DeMille was able to use actual circus people in minor roles and as extras during the location filming for GSOE. Some of these screen appearances were rather substantial and even involved speaking a few lines, while others last only a few fleeting seconds. These cameo appearances by performers, bosses, and even workmen added a tremendous amount of authenticity to the film and now have great historical value. Here are a few frame enlargements showing real circus people interacting with the film’s featured players. (Your help in identifying them will be welcomed by the rest of us.) |

The figure above the ticket wagon at left depicts Paul Jerome. Another was of Emmett Kelly. One wonders if it was an honor to be featured on the Front End, or a case of, "I can't give you any more money, but you can have a cut-out over a ticket wagon."
