The incomparable Donnie 'Okie' Carr.
Suzy the elephant and Freddy the 'professional lion' as we called him. This is from before 1978 I believe. Dennis

This photo brings back memories of Gunther riding atop the elephant with his tiger. Behind the curtain Gunther would have the tiger on a long chain, on his command, the tiger would leap from the floor onto the back of the elephant. They would then use a ten foot stepladder for Gunther to climb aboard. The music would start, the curtain opened and wow , what a sight, what a showman

Okie was the opposite of GGW. He had no interest in being a showman. He was in the business of training and not entertaining he told. It was good for me as it gave me the opportunity to learn the act from him and good for him as he didn't have to perform for audiences.

That's not EXACTLY how it was done

I'll send Buckles a photo of it

When I see a picture of Okie posted here, I find no need to think of another trainer on another show.

It wasw a little hairy with performers bunched up in back door area and Congo there and tiger cage. Gunther would reach thru cage and grab lunge swtrap as cage door opened and tiger immediately went from pedestal beside Congo onto elephant as Gunther scrambled up. All coordinates had to be instantanious. When coming out as Congo stopped cage door was opened and tiger jumped down and into cage. Again all systems had to be just right. There was no plan B. Thru all those years and shows I was always awed by the fact that he did it successfully. Incredidable. One TV taping at night after show he was going around the track with entire Co. assembled in St. Pete ad tiger jumped off Congo at far end of track dragging Gunther with him head over heels to back door area. Entire CO. and TV people were in shock, fortunately no damage done. All those years of similar escapades and it seems a harmed life. Many nights on animal walk were hairy as well with the elephants. He never collar chained any ding dongs. Amazing. johnny

Thanks John for the complete

explanation of the routine

When I said "not Exactly" I was

referring to a slightly different

manor of the mount & dismount

It is indeed incredible that it

went on for 2 full years without

a public mishap (& no insurance)
