I always liked this photo! I believe that this is from the 1968 season, first year Rex worked the act from horseback.

The swinging ladders & the little

lights on the flying frame put

this photo in a narrow time frame

but I don't remember when

That's either an inside ticket box

or a souvenir book stand laying

in the foreground

Tommy Clark had the #1 ticket box

& the Blue Room back then

what show would this be?

Chic Silber said...

That would be Miss Ava & I believe

the fellow in ring 1 is little

Bobby Kline (not to be confused

with much taller Robert Cline)

This is most likely to be some

town in Connecticut with those

extinguishers by the quarters

This photo was used by the San Antonio Express-News to accompany my article for their annual "My Most Unusual Christmas" series. My story concerned our returning broke from the ill-fated Winter Tour of 1980, and spending four months of bitter privation in Winterquarters. It was the winter Florida froze. The elephants and cats were allotted full provisions, shelter, and constant care. But Froggie's Cookhouse quickly ran out of coffee, salt, pepper, and bread, and the skeleton crew in DeLand barely survived on 12 ounces of rice and beans, twice a day.

The man at R is indeed Paddlefoot Bobby Cline. For Anonymous, the show is Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros.

My everlasting memory image of

Froggie is that of him with his

head on his folded arms sound

asleep on the light board

He was an agreeable & friendly

fellow who was a hard worker

I caught up with this show 2-years later in Winston-Salem at Bethania Station. I was working night shift at the time and got to the lot early. A guy walked up to me and said, “Wana loosen-up a little?” I helped set up the sideshow top and was treated to lunch in the cook house. I was fortunate to meet the world’s most famous married couple, Emmett and Pericilla Bejano. I had just read Lewis’ new book” Carnival’. I asked Emmett if he was familiar with the story of “Spaghetti” as told in the book. (Laurinburg, NC) Emmett told me he was not familiar with that story but he went on to say that he was involved in a Hey-Rube once and saw a mark nailed to the ground with a tent stake. I last saw Pericilla in Gibtown in early 1996 walking around at the big trade show sponsored by the IISA . I believe that she died shortly thereafter.

Just spoke with Kenny & he told

me that this was likely to be

the Philly Memorial Day week

date with added attractions

The flying rig with the little

lights was Fay Alexander's &

it played over ring 3 along with

the Gaona cousins over ring 1

Fay also had his Al's Lemonzine

It's all coming back to me now

This was a Shrine sponsered date

& played with Vivona's A of A
