Bertram Mills was the 1st circus I saw in Hampshire as an 8-year old - it would have been either 1957 or 1958 as well. Coco, the clown, disappointed me though I found the rest great - though preferring the aerial stuff.
The other local regular circus visitor at that time in the Southampton/Portsmouth area was Chipperfields circus which also had a small zoo on Southampton Common run by Mary Chipperfield (this is now a wildlife centre).
I always enjoyed the Mill's show more than the Chipperfield's one.
This or the previous year would have been my 1st circus, aged about 8. I didn't like Coco, or any of the clowns, but otherwise enjoyed it greatly especially the aerial stuff.
Our other local circus was Chipperfields, with Bertram Mills & Chipperfields tending to compete in Southern Hampshire. Mary Chipperfield also ran a small zoo on Southampton common at the time -this is now the Hawthorns Wildlife centre.

The Sue and Rudi Lenz Chimpanzees were flown from Europe to LA to appear on The Hollywood Palace when it was hosted by Fred Astaire.
I notice JOHNNY PUGH and Neddy Toth's father-in-law's act, FERRY FORST !
He never wanted his daughters to be seen together in the public's eye so as NOT to give away the trick to his GREAT illusion act!!

Frank,
I mentioned this one time before that the CBCB programs showed both girls together, which blew the magic if anyone read the program.
