Recently I have been receiving many inquiries from my friends back in the USA. They want to know if the BURKA rule is in effect here in Thailand, my second home. I'm not 100% sure for humans but for elephants I can attest that no, no BURKA rule for elephants so far in the Land of Smiles, Thailand. |

How curious so many of your friends in the U.S. are asking about burkas in Thailand, since less than 5% of the population is Muslim.
To my knowledge, Buddhist women have not taken to covering themselves with black bedspreads.
I would like someone to "blog" what is this "Burka" rule. Guess I got lost somewhere along the way. Tanglefoot. AQlso exactly what is a "Lockhart hook"? Seems an elephant trainer named Lockhart invented some sort of hook. In some 70 yrs. around elephants I still do not know what this is. In fact just a few short yrs ago I became aware of the name Lockhart. Boy am I in the dark ages. This word of late "ankus" seems to be some personal undesirable element of society. They never taught any of this stuff in the small town school I attended.
Love the head pieces! ~frank
5 Percent of a 60 plus million population is NOT an insignificant amount. Anonymous, do you always try to take the fun out of posts?
Col Herriott,
Hello. From what I have been able to find out for you, is that a Lockhart hook" was a short wooden handled hand tapered elephant hook or ankus, with a leather lash/thong on the end of it. Here is what I came up with

If you type Sam Lockhart in the top left search bar on the nice blog of Author Jamie Clubb he has a lot of Sam Lockhart information.
I hope this information is of use to you Col.
Tanglefoot Herriott,
If you were looking to research this topic, the correct spelling must first be used. It is actually inscribed the "Burcka" Rule, recently adopted by the USDA. The ruling states no individual can work with felines or in an arena until Wade Burck determines they are qualified. I hope this clears up the confusion.
