Circus scraps plans for Coney Island. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus said it won't be in Coney Island this summer -- a move prompted by scheduling conflicts and the expense of running a show all summer. Over the past two summers, the big top drew more than 250,000 people to Coney Island. Ringling also called off its regular show at Madison Square Garden this spring because of renovations at the arena, leaving no show in the city this year. |

Hi Don, This info and photo is apparently from a recent NY Daily News article. The photo appears to be Sarah Houcke who has not been with RBBB for a number of years and who never appeared at Coney Island. Ah, the media.
Best to you out west,
Paul Gutheil
PS Personal note, you've got my vote.
How long has it been since there wasn't a RBBB, B&B or Barnum circus in NYC [Manhattan] in the spring? 1919, 1909 and 1872? The Barnum show opened in brooklyn in the first year, 1871. 1909 was an exception, the Ringlings switched their two circuses, B&B opened in Chicago that season, Ringling in the Garden. 1919 was the first year of the Combined Shows.
There was no show in the Garden in 1898 the first year of the B&B European tour. However Mr. Bailey's #2 unit Forepaugh-Sells filled the void the remaining four years.
