Belle Benchley #7

In 1931, Mrs. Benchley was instrumental in obtaining the Zoo’s first gorillas Mbongo and N’gagi from Martin and Osa Johnson. (As the result of a letter she wrote, describing how San Diego’s climate was ideally suited for maintaining gorillas, the Johnsons reduced their asking price to within the Zoo’s means.) Mrs. Benchley is seen here feeding ripe cherries to Mbongo.

The last time I was in Balboa Park some years ago they still had a most impressive gorilla exhibit.

I have not been to the Wild Animal Park so don't know if the gorillas are still downtown or not.

Friend Reynolds took Mary Jane and me to see the Atlanta Zoo from backstage and they are very strong in gorillas.
