My first year in California with the Polack Show, while playing the LA area, this gentleman approached one morning and introduced himself as Clarence Messer Jr. one of my father's brothers.
He said he had often tried to contact him and in fact while working as a barber near the Barnes Quarters, chatted with several elephant men who knew him but never could get in touch.
Seeing our name in the Polack advertising, he thought his search was over but I regretfully explained that he was two years late.
My dad spoke very little of his true family, maybe it was by design since he was incredibly devoted to his adopted mother as the letters she saved indicate. |
