(The recent postings of wild west show photos reminded me that a noted wild west show performer named Adele von Ohl Parker once lived not too far from where I grew up on Cleveland’s west side.) Adele von Ohl was raised in New Jersey by parents who were successful horse breeders and trainers. (Her family had supplied horses to George Washington back during the American Revolution.) An excellent horsewoman, she joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show in the early 1900s. Her ability to train horses and perform daring equestrian feats soon made her one of the show’s stars.
