Richard Reynolds says - - - In connection with the earlier Komodo Dragon postings, here is another example of a carnival show exploiting the mystique of the Dragon. This photo is from Hal Guyon. He identified it as Cetlin & Wilson, 1950s. The signage does mention the word "Komodo" that I can see. However, use of the words "Dragon" and its being "Found on Java Sea Island" plus the images of the animal, clearly imply the Komodo Dragon. Most probably, the "Prehistoric Monster" of this show was one of the common large monitors related to the Komodo but not the real thing. Good candidates would be the water monitor of southeastern Asia or perhaps a Nile monitor form Africa. As for genuine thing, I can report that Zoo Atlanta recently received two baby Komodos from Los Angles Zoo where they were hatched on August 13. We already have a large 18-year old male named "Slasher." It would not do to put the youngsters in with him. |

Richard, Just by chance came across an invitation from the NY Zoological Society for their 1956 Spring Garden Party. It says in part: "3:50 - Since last year's Garden Party we have given our two Komodo Monitors (the "Dragon Lizards") a spectacular new setting in the Reptile House. You'll see them eating eggs from a ladle."
In regard to an earlier blog sequence is the following: 3:20 -
"One of the nicest things about our Lion House is that so many of the Big Cats are hand-reared. You'll see Helen Martini petting some of them."
Best, Paul Gutheil
