The elephant in this setting has to be a photograph. Pretty clever!
"The Light Of Asia" was Adam Forepaugh's response to P.T. Barnum's
Sacred White Elephant "Toug-Toulog" which led to the 1884 "White Elephant War" in the Press.
Legend has it that this was "John" (John L. Sullivan) painted white.
Barnum's white elephant, said to be legitimate, died in the Bridgeport
Winter Quarters fire in November of 1887.

The engraving was indeed taken from an actual photograph. The print I've seen did not include any people, so perhaps they were added by the engraver, or a second image was taken at that time.
