101_Ranch_Real_Wild_West_AUTO_POLO_(1913)_Half-Sheet_Flat_(Linen)

From Chris Berry

Automobiles were still quite a novelty in 1913 when this lithograph was produced by Strobridge for the 101 Ranch Real Wild West Show. This display took a sport normally associated with horses (polo) and applied it to the open-air cars. No doubt an entertaining feature, "Auto Polo" was - nevertheless - an attraction that soon faded into history.

The auto polo activity was the subject of some feature story writing in Billboard or Clipper about the time of the litho issuance. It could be that one guy was the principal promoter. He may have booked similar activity at amusements parks and fair grandstands, wherever a plot of ground and grandstand seating were adjacent to one another.

I've often wondered why there hasn't been a motorcycle riding act, in the ring, that mimicked bareback riding, or acrobats that do backward somersaults from one moving car to another down the hippodrome track. That's the sort of thrilling, "high risk" behavior that once characterized circus performance. The first farm boy that saw someone do it on horseback must have been absolutely amazed that an elegant-attired rider was able to take an everyday use equine and do something so unusual and daring with it.

Today, most such activity is the fodder of reality TV shows and such, so the people stay at home, in front of the screens, rather than going to the circus.
