This act is a sleeper I guess. Never heard of it. Looks good. Someone please send particulars about it. Rarely do we see a new equestrian act. I am anxious to hear about it. Thanks, Johnny herriott
Erica Zerbini on her gypsy vanner horse which precedes her liberty horse act that was trained by Ian Garden, Snr.
Very nice photos Mr Manero. Who produced this show? Can't quite place the ring curbs.
Paul Gutheil
PS Ever have any relatives in NJ?
Manero's was THE place to go for Italian food and to hang out when I was in HS many years ago.
I am surprised to see a Gypsy Vanner...This Breed if good stock is extremely expensive..It either has a Glass eye, gimped heart or is not pure...or...somebody dropped some serious coin on this unit!...Kudo's to the Zerbini's, I suspect this baby put a dent in your wallet!!...
Fellow Horseman..
Exhibitor of "Worlds Smallest"
The show was produced by Paul V. Kaye. It was huge, filling every nook and corner of the arena, although sadly for the last time. The show moves to a new arena downtown next year. It would be easier to describe what was not in the show than what was. This is the last remaining of the truly great and huge Shrine shows. This is the Detroit, Texas dates, Minneappolis, and such that I worked as a young person. Itt was a joy to see.
Hold Your Horses .... I think you better add JAFFA Shrine Circus, Altoona, PA. Fifteen performances, seven days. April 2010 -71st Edition was the most successful to date... The Shriners in Altoona still handle the circus like all Shriners use to do....The Shrine Circus Center is the most beautiful venue to view or take pictures of a Shrine Circus..And the most photographed Shrine Circus in the USA..If you want to take me to task come to Altoona next April 11 - 17, 2011. But, if you intend to make one of the weekend performances buy your tickets in advance.. You will be glad that you made the trip. April 1l/17,2011 "Circus Week Altoona."
Mr. Orr, with all due respect. Altoona is NOTHING compared to Evansville. Though the venue in Altoona may be the most beautiful venue used for a circus, the performance is merely a one ring production of Hanneford. Hanneford has a great show. However, Evansville is something special.
Mr. Dan the Booker,
Possibly, you have started the biggest thread of comments on Buckles blog since the blog began.
It is totally unfair to compare Altoona to Evansville.
Altoona is the most elegant setting for any one ring circus. Evansville has presented the most consistent line-up of circus acts in a three ring format for many years.
Struppi Hanneford's line-up is solid and Paul V. Kaye's line-up is solid. Prior to Hanneford the Vidbels had Altoona for several years; the one year I visited their line-up was most impressive.
I am anxiously waiting for comments from circus professionals and friends of the circus regarding your posting.

There was no intention to slight or overlook Altoona. I have seen the show there and the beautiful building. Unfortunately, it cannot house a three ring circus so I choose not to include it in my comments in spite of my appreciation of the shows there.
I'm trying to plan on going to Hal Guyton's circus weekend in Columbia, South Carolina so maybe it is also time for a return to Altoona.

I know I've said this before, but one of the similarities between Evansville and Altoona is the way the Shrine and the towns themselves anticipate and receive the circus.
Both of these towns have huge Shrine participation and both towns have the public anxiously awaiting the arrival of the show. Evansville is a Thanksgiving tradition. There are yard signs in every neighborhood all throughout the town announcing the circus coming to town. Businesses all over the Altoona area have signs welcoming the circus.
Evansville is a larger venue than Altoona but houses are usually 3/4 to full and I believe most shows in Altoona
(at the beautiful Jaffa Mosque)are usually sold out or turn away.
I played both at various times. For the moment they are great, but I have also played Fort Wayne and Omaha and both are equally par wxcellence each year with the Shrine very aware that their local circus going public expect a good show and are willing to give their producer an affordable budget. It seems that Evansville is pretty much the same show every year with maybe one or two unique acts. Yes it is a great circus but a program comparison for the past decade would be surprisingling similar. I doubt that other circus chairmen would accept. Be that as it is it seems to be the gathering bplace, however there was a time when over thanksgiving the place to be for acts, circuspeople, and wannbabes for so many years was Ft. Worth. Will Rogers Coliseum for some of the greatest gathering of circus people, a fabulous show. It was the last Fall date and followed Houston, San Antonio, Austin plus all the Clyde Bros. Gil Gray Texas towns. Nothing like it. Called the "Texas dates". Kansas City, New Orleans and Evansville were also o, but the were only pretenders. We remember it well and yes they always had three rings of elephants, great cat acts and some of the finest flying acts in showbiz Plus Loyal Repenski, Hanneford, Zoppe, Cristkiani. Lots of memories It was the place to be.john herriott.
I think Evansville is not just a big date, but a tradition for the city and the artists who perform there. One of the last big dates that can boast 3 rings of elephants( with a pretty girl on each one),12 web girls with a featured aerialist,3 ring displays of animal acts. Always some of the finest performers in our business. It has been several years since I performed in Evansville and I still miss it very much. To me,it was an honor to be there.
I'm back from the brink of war
in Korea & all went very well
Saw this gorgeous horse photo
which reminded me of visiting
a draught horse exhibition &
competition in Hyde Park in
London some 20 odd years ago
Saw more breeds of draughts
from all over Europe than I
ever knew existed before
It was the also 1st time I
got te see the Gypsy Caravan
horses that the Roma of the UK
had cross bred from several
larger breeds in order to end
up with a smaller but sturdy
horse to pull their caravans
I'm told that the name "Vanner"
was made up by some Americans
that imported some of these in
the 90s (not that long ago)
Some of the show horses I saw
of many breeds were breathtaking
Sooooo glad to be back home
Kimchee for Thanksgiving was
not the highlight of the trip
Could anyone post the act names
& running order of this show
Looks kinda like the good ol days
Very obvious that a horse makes
a much better looking unicorn
than any goat (or goats)
Chic,
How would you know? There are no pictures of one, as no one has ever seen one, but they are described as being of small/medium build, with cloven hooves, a beard, and curly hair. Sounds like an Angora goat to me.

You mean to tell me that Kenny's unicorn WASN'T real after all??? I'm soooo crushed! ~frank
Either you drank too much RBBB
flukem juice or you must be a
friend of that farmer that did
such a fine mutilation job
Whose description are you
reading from Wade
Ask any 4 year old girl &
she'll tell you the gospel
Frank,
Yes it was real, according to Greek Mythology. So was the same one Circus World Museum had, as well as the herd that Moonbeam Jetstar, or what ever his name was created, with their skills in magic.
