That season we used seat wagons and showed open air and sometimes in front of the grandstand at Fairgrounds.
On one such occasion we pulled in with the elephant truck and house trailer, dead tired in the middle of the night.
After looking around I found an outlet and plugged in lights for the night until the rest of the show arrived.
I was just going to bed when the lights went out and stepping outside saw a man holding my light cord and who started in with. "You circus people come in and take over like you own the place......!
Without thinking I got him by the scruff of the neck and the seat of the pants and on his tippy toes I
scurried him off and tossed him into some bushes.
He returned in short order with the Police but by this time my wife had heard the commotion and squared the beef by explaining to the Officer that we had a small child, which we did, and we needed heat in the trailer.

Later in the season I was being visited by a young elephant man, whom I'll not name, and while introducing him to Sid (who seemed a bit preoccupied) he said, "Buckles taught me everything I know about elephants!"
Sid answered, "Did he teach you how to kick the Fair Secretary in the ass?".

Buckles,
Great story, LOL. One of the greatest mysteries in all of circus is the "electric authority", and who authorized it and who didn't, who will pay for it, and who won't, when you can have it, and when you can't etc. etc. To this day I don't anybody knows who the Wizard of Power is, and who has final say. Many times, in the quest for human comfort such as heat or air, you had to stand someone on their tippy toes, and find some bushes, so you were by no mean's out of line. Simply following protocol is all.
