Gene Garner #1 (From Buckles)

Scan13228, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Gene was a remarkable guy and like Wayne Franzen, despite the lack of any background with exotic animals could train whatever the situation presented.
I first met him and Rebecca when they came to Carson & Barnes with the leopard-dog arena act that D.R. bought from John Cuneo.
Some years later Gene delivered the same act to Mexico after it was purchased by Gran Circo Bells and wound up staying. He eventually married one of the Bells daughters and even took the name "Jim Bells".
The dogs and leopard seen above are no doubt, remains of that act but not the "zebra".

Bobby Gibbs must have helped him train the zebra.

Was there any actual walking to this or was it a 'statue'? Dennis Younger

OKIE told me he and Gene had a friendly competition on Bell, always trying to out-do each other in training. Rebecca the Duchess is off-line for some time now, and asks, "Does anyone have an update for Gene?"

I met Gene's son two years ago, on Circo Atayde Bros/Aguire Family Circo, where he was presenting a camel liberty act. Nice fellow, with a talented juggler son.

Hi Buckles

Gene Garner is now in Mexico, got back after a 25 years stay in Brazil.

He sends you his best regards, he has fond memories of your parents and you.

He is traveling in the circus attending his pony ride with his daughter Jazmin Garner Esqueda.
He was having some serious issues with his health, but he's got them under control for now.

Whatever became of the Tom Packs elephants that Gene had on Bell in 1964 (Jean, Penny, Tommy, Shirley and Alice)?
