Dennis Price, (better known as "Hungry") was an elephant man from the Dailey Show.
Steven D. King(Steve King)was a concessionaire who came from a well to do family in San Antonio. Barbara said that he once dated her sister Hope. They were quite the opposite in demeanor even to the cars they drove, he had the latest model and Hope drove a clunker. They had some sort of domestic dispute and Hope decided to leave and out of desperation Steve threw her car keys away. She retaliated by breaking out his head light and the Demolition Derby began. After the destruction was complete, Hope found an extra and sputtered away while Steve had to call for a wrecker. Every time I hear this story I think of the Laurel and Hardy movie where James Finlayson in a dispute, destroys their car while they level his house.
A few other follow-ups, Nick Bengor was later 24-hour man for Uncle Sid and I see John Caudill listed, aka Big John Walker of concession fame. Always interesting to look back. Erik Jaeger
Buckles- I was at Ward Hall's House Saturday and he was telling me a story on the Daily show and he mentioned "Hungry Dennis"...So naturally I asked.. "How did he get the name Hungry?"...I do not want to tell Ward's story, But I can tell you it involved 1.Ben Davenport 2.Pancakes 3.New Cookhouse Rule I always find Circus nicknames interesting especially if I know how they got them...
I asked Smokey that same question and he said, "Always Hungry". Louis Reed handed out the nick names as did Rex Williams later and they were both pretty good at it. Smokey said he once took Hungry to a nice restaurant and he asked for two cheese burgers, a coke and some fries. Smokey said, "You can get that anywhere, order something nice, I'm paying for it". He asked the waitress what they had and she said the fish was very good and he replied "Hell no! I hate fish!" then looking thru the menu (he was totally illiterate) he finally pointed at one choice and said, "This looks more like it!" And the waitress laughed and said, "Filet of Sole!" coming right up!"
