For many years, Kalmbach Publishing in Milwaukee was noted for its books of railroad photos. One of its most famous publications was CIRCUS TRAINS, an album of circus train photos taken by Charles Philip Fox and published in 1947. (I understand that used copies are now hard to find and sell for huge prices.) Here are a few of the photos that appear in it. If you have more information on what is shown in these photos, sharing it with the rest of us will be greatly appreciated. |

This photo was taken in 1946, where the Milwaukee Road crossed highway 51 in Belot, WI. The train is heading to the west.

Chappie once told me that his 1947 book was not a great seller for the publisher--until July 1956.

This book does turn up on e-bay from time to time and can be a bargain.

Can any one of us look at Fox photos and so much more and not say, "God Bless Chappie?!"

Here we have a good look at the lettering used on the cars in 1946. The flat cars themselves (also the stocks) were painted yellow. They were that way from 1944 through 1947.
The lettering in 1946 was unique, red letters shaded in green. The next year, 1947, the red letters were outlined in silver.
During this period, the sleepers were painted red with silver lettering. Photo #6 shows the red sleepers.
