In picture #20 of this series this wagon is painted yellow, here it is painted a darker color, maybe red. If both shots are from 1949 can this be explained ?

Hal,
You are correct. This photo is from 1949 when the bell wagon was painted red and gold.
The prior color photo showing it as yellow is actually from 1950. Remember the sideshow color photos from awhile back. They were also from 1950. The color photos in this set are most likely incorrectly labeled.

DeMille was around in '49, scouting every aspect of the show for his picture. His presence might figure in any change of paint jobs. Remember the movie line about these bells, "They've rung in some good shows."

I have wondered why a few photos were in color and the rest b & w.
All I was told was they are from 1949 Columbus Ohio.
Leave it up to the sharp-eyed blog viewers to count the rivets.
