I believe the year was 1977, based on chimp show pictures and my wardrobe.
I had the sea lions play My Country Tis of Thee (or God Save The Queen for British guests). My horns were made from trombone bells and mouth pieces with pitch-pipe reeds for the different notes. Bob Politte, our Business Manager, liked to work with little machine shop projects and made them for the show.
I used the horns for several years. Although we never had a lot of protest problems about the shows we'd get a few negative letters in the paper about them. They say the shows claim to be educational but they still have the animals play musical horns. It was the only trick they singled out. The horns did go over well but they weren't a feature. I took them out, put in a few new things and kept working for a few more decades.
Jim,
The white bucks are a classic wardrobe accessory, which will never go out of style. I have always believed Feld made a big mistake dressing GGW and Buckles in boots, instead of staying with this proven winner.

They would have looked GREAT with the purple outfit! ~frank
