That's a big marquee.
Seems odd to have the artists parked out front. Long walk to the back door.
Erik, isn't this about a 120' top?

Very nice Robert

With 2 sets of quarters & the

canvas ragged tight & no sagging

(Hey there Double Stake how does

this top look to you) I understand

they get mighty winds down under

Chic Silber said...

Maybe the extra space in the

marquee is for the overflow

crowds they must get down there

Buckles,
I tried to guage it by the trucks, and it appears to be a little under a 120' with 35' to 40' middles, depending on the width of the fabric used. If I remember correctly, Lief Osmundsen or Butch Troyer once told me, anything over a 100' they liked having two rows of quarter poles. Gopher had a smaller big top years ago with 2 rows of quarters, for the windy midwest. I believe Hoxie had an old Hunt Bros big top with one row of quarters that was 110', so no sure fire way of knowing.
Chic,
One row of stakes today, hard ground with a wee bit of limestone, but at least the weather is still good. We always hoped if we got hit, that we took it on the round end and not the long side!
My daughter Natalie has been pressed into service this afternoon with Dane being away at college. At least she keeps the crew squared away!

To Erik
My teachings were over 110 two sets of Quarters.Once Chuck & Gracie MacIntosh leased their big top to Gil Gray's Texas State Fair circus. Three middles and a 120 with only one set of quarters. It sure made me a believer in the over 110 two sets of quarters theory.

Yes Chic we can have some bad winds in aussie western australia can be the worst when my brother Alby made this tent he had steel cable in a sleeve down every quater pole. we also used to put as many trucks around the tent as we could to tie down to.

Buckles you are correct 40ft centres buckles we never had any trouble with performers getting to the back door for there act. but remember we would only show 2 shows
a day in school holidays one on sunday no school holidays one show per day.

Yup Erik Lief told me the exactly

the same thing & the 100 ft would

be safer with 2 sets but certainly

he wouldn't build anything wider

without the 2nd set

It was very sad during his last

years as he was very aware of his

memory lapses & felt helpless at

times to recall simple thngs

Truly 1 of the nicest gentlemen

Steve we had an over load of tent Riggers alby made this 4 man tent
for the overflow i think next day
they were all gone so only went up once note i did not use the old Aussie slang for tent riggers
politically correct. glen west told me that in NSW they want a flood plan wont be long before you have to put life jackets under the
seats Robert Perry
