William Adams "Bill" Griffith passed away on Sunday, October 10. He was six days short of his birthday. I've been told that he read the insertion on the blog published a few days ago and that he was happy to see it. The blog was his connection to the circus world, as he remarked to a friend. Here are some links to local coverage. A story about his calliope museum: http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/article_aa63e1fc-d58e-11df-956c-001cc4c002e0.html Bill wrote his own obituary: http://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/host.madison.com/content/tncms/assets/editorial/b/ff/323/bff323ae-d591-11df-b9ac-001cc4c002e0-revisions/4cb3a1ceb1365.pdf.pdf A tribute by the Wisconsin State Journal's beloved columnist George Hesselberg: http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/article_c235041e-d58e-11df-856e-001cc4c002e0.html Bill was a unique man, and a rarity in the circus business, having figured out how to make money in it, and to retire from it with his earnings reasonably intact. He went on to even greater success as a newspaper publisher, and owner of other businesses, but the circus remained a love to the end of his days. To know Bill was a pleasure, to have shared interests a treasure. Our sympathies to his wife, Dorothy, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. |
