Paul, With my limited German, zimt means cinnamon, which probably refers to the bear's coloring. I believe it is a subspecies of the American black bear only a cinnamon color. Just a guess. Erik Jaeger

Zimt is the German word for cinnamon.So guess it was the brown
version of the American black bear.
