Robert, after viewing this picture, I must ask, in Australia do you lead and mount horses from the left or right side?

Wonderful question Buckles.

I hope Timmy Commerford is reading the blog today so he can verify if my recollection is correct regarding his family's elephant ride loading/unloading system.

As we know in circus the elephant ride "trail" goes the same direction as an elephant act would, to the right as you stand at the back of the ring.

The Commerford elephant rides goes to the left, they do very few circus dates; they work the big fairs.

Twenty-five years ago, or so, I worked for the Commerfords and asked Bob the reason that their elephant ride goes backward. He chuckled and said that when they got their first elephant, Annie, that they mounted the ride as they would horses. Bob Commerford was a major breeder of Shetland ponies in Connecticut.

Working for the Commerfords (promotion/publicity) was a great experience and I say with respect and accuracy that the backward elephant ride grosses just as much as the other system.

Timmy! I hope you are out there today.
