Realizing this is a similar thing that killed GGW's "adopted" father, it must have been a real jaw clencher for him to do it on a slick concrete floor with a thin piece of rubber for traction.

Wade, Harry Williams sustained serious injuries in a "Roman Chariot" race and subsequently passed away. In my personnel list on Ringling over the years the legal name was Gebel for him and his family. I know he became indespensible in all deptmts. for Carola and Circus Williams even to marrying her daughter. I understand that both Gunther and Charly Baumann were there as employees at the time of the accident. Someone correct me if I am wrong. Johnny

Incidentally he only charged down the front track all alone. It was not a race and only the finale of Henry Schroer riding Roman in the "Courier" routine. Gunther was not about to let Henry take a bow.Tanglefoot

The music played for this particular trick was an old time march titled THE BEN-HUR CHARIOT RACE by E.T. Paull. (Merle Evans might very well have used this same number for a Roman post riding presentation in 1919 during his first season with RBBB.)
