One of the best clown routines with a commercial tie-in that I ever saw was on the 1966 Ringling show. At the time, Ajax Laundry Detergent was running some TV ads showing a knight, dressed all in white, carrying a white lance and riding a white horse, galloping down the street. Encountered people in incredibly dirty clothes, the knight would point his lance at them and instantly their clothes would be spotlessly clean. The clown gag used a knight dressed just like the one in the commercials. Galloping down the track, he encountering a clown dressed in an Emmett Kelly-type getup. When the knight pointed his lance at him, the clown’s outer costume was pulled away to reveal a white one underneath. I don’t recall that Ajax was ever mentioned by name, but the band played the same music that was heard during the commercials, the lyrics to which I can still recall after 44 years: “New A-jax Laundry Detergent is stronger than dirt.”
Lou Jacobs - A man of LARGE cigars, small CARS, tiny UMBRELLAS that spouted rain, motorized bathtubs with faux water from the shower heads, rabbits that look like little dogs, or elephants and a WONDERFUL HUMAN BEING, husband and father to two beautiful daughters! ~frank
The Ajax routine sounds like something that Frosty Little would have come up with, but 66 was two years before he started with RBBB, wasn't it? ~frank
Thanks for correcting me, again! What can I say my ideas are right, but my keyboard is dyslexic! Yes it was St. Knucklehead who would do whatever his master required. I think you're right about a second dog, might have been named Peanuts, but I'm not sure. ~frank

I guess you were only kidding
about a rabbit looking like a dog
That was Knucklehead Frank that
seemed to have the patience of a
saint in any of the getups that
Lou dressed him up in
One of the very best performing
dogs I've ever seen
Lou & Knucklehead were featured
on a Christmas clock from Feld
I'll send Buckles a photo for
those who might have not seen it
I will check with Dolly as it
seems that there must have been
more than 1 dog over the years
