RBBB 1930s #9 (From Eric Beheim)

RBBB 1930s-9, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Giraffe-necked women from Burma. (Knowing what years they were with the show might help to date when these Ringling photos were taken.)

On the left is a sign promoting the booklet which the ladies sold for 5 cents. The year is 1933.

This tradition of neck elongation is still followed in Northern Thailand. Not far from the Burma (Myanmar now)border with Thailand.
Two years ago, while visiting two elephant camps, I made a short side trip to this village. Sadly it is just a tourist attraction that brings needed revenue to these very poor people. I saw girls as young as maybe 12 fitted with a few brass rings around the neck as well as about a dozen other women with considerably more.

I saw the booklet today on EBAY.
A little rich for my blood.
