In 1964 when I was 18, I saw Johann Petursson when he appeared at the Cuyahoga County Fair in Ohio. (He had a pit show on the midway, where he was billed as “The Viking Giant.” The outfit he wore was like something out of a Wagner opera.)
Among the souvenirs he had for sale was a postcard showing him in his “Wotan” costume, and which cost 25 cents. I bought one, and made the mistake of paying him with a 50-cent piece. He gave me my postcard, but not my change, and I was too timid to point out his oversight (something he was probably counting on.) Years later, I sold that postcard on eBay and got back many times the 50 cents I originally paid for it, so it all worked out in the end.

I was about 10 when I saw Petursson at the State Fair in Dallas. He was wearing the wardrobe Eric described. I bought one of his rings, and if memory serves, it was a quarter. The trick now is to get into the trunks and try to find it.
