No doubt Unus was great, but there were others who did various combination tricks. The Great Barton, Jolly Junior, Martin Lamberti, Little John, and currently Li Liu are some that come to mind. Google Li Liu to see some excellent balancing tricks. I believe Li did ten rings at one time.
Another great was Lothar. I remember him practicing his one-finger stand in 1964, on the Beatty show. The act he developed was outstanding in his specialty. I almost said field.
Lothar, like many showfolks, had genius in other surprising moments. When Mr. and Mrs. Beatty had critical wiring problems in their Airstream, Lothar came over, checked the entire system, found all the trouble spots, and virtually re-wired the whole trailer. When Lothat finished and emerged from the trailer,he proudly showed me a fistfull of $20bills Mr. Beatty paid him.
Lothar Geyer, was from Denmark and out of the Frelanni bike act. He bought the props from Joe Galasso who had the balancing act on Beatty before Lothar. Joe had been in the old Loyal Repensky Troup. These props were still being used by an act a few years back. I don't think Lothar did a ring spin in the act, however.
There were many good balancers years back. One other who did combo tricks and was good on either hand with one arms was Walter Wasil. He was from Austria and worked the Globetrotter circuit for Simone Finner.
My Mother Gerda Brandt (then became "Coates" after marriage) was with the Frielani bike act w/ Clyde Beatty for many years. She came over from east Germany around 1953-1954 to join the act. She passed away in 2006 and I now have a large box of hundreds of photos from her travels around the country (and abroad) w/ the group. I also have a video from when they were on The Mickey Mouse Club TV show doing their unicycle act. I found your blog while doing a "Google" search on the Frielani's.

And not just a one-hand stand! When was this trick last seen in the US?

The layover position of Unus was unique.

Lothar Geyer came over with the
Frielani bicycle troupe along with
Fritz, Fred, Greta Frisk, Evelyn
and another girl who left and was
replaced by the Digger Pugh girl
Jill who Lothar married
He probably had the most elegant
appearance of the 1 finger acts
as his tall slim figure and the
perfectly tailored wardrobe was
of great asset to his style
In retirement he bought a boat
& "Captain Lothar" ran fishing
charters out of Cortez
Joe Galasso also did a nice job
On the other hand I have seen a
couple of performers who should
NEVER have done this act (but did)
Airstreams had (maybe still do)
the "Univolt" 12 volt system
with a tremendous inverter that
supplied most of the power for
lighting & other special devices
They claimed it was a safer style
but the dual wiring often was a
problem to the unwashed

Lothar's equipment was sold to Hashi Dubsky (Harry, Jr.) and then to Adrian Chapay-Poema.
