weapons only fire a light beam
for the obvious reasons
That is correct! Most galleries, today use #2 lead shot. As Chic said, some use a light beam.

still use live amunition
Maybe BBs or pellets with air
or CO2 charge (or corks)
There was at least 1 shooting gallery still using live .22 rifles in in the US in 2009:

#2 lead shot is used in the "Shoot Out The Star" guns that are air powered and still being made http://www.shootingstargames.com/
It's amazing that even 22 shorts
are still allowed in joints
Lead shot powered by air or CO2
is still not "live amunition"
There is no primer to ignite
the powder that propels the shot
22 cal are rim fire and almost
all others are center primered
(but I'm sure you knew that)
