York SC Circus Festival #3

york circus day 002, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

"As mentioned before my first recollections of life come from
these days. My father worked for Ray Rogers from 1937 to '43
primarily as a side show ticket seller during which time the
elephants were under the care of Joe Secastin, Mac MacDonald
and finally Bert Pettus who had been raised from a teenager
working in the Elephant Dept.
In 1943 during the Beatty-Wallace season, Mr. Beatty hired my
father to handle his three elephants "Mary", "Sidney" and "Anna
May" and at the close of the season we left with him.
The picture above in the lower right hand corner would be from
that season and the elephant empress is no doubt Harriet
Beatty's sister Jean Evans."

On the subject of circuses under the big top, Elliott and I are going up to Dade City tomorrow to catch the Carson & Barnes matinee. I mention this so the artists can be forewarned will afford ample opportunity to get out the good wardrobe.

I`m planning on going down to North Augusta SC on June 3 and catch Carson Barnes. I think this is the only South Carolina date they have this year, but I can get there in a little over an hour, so no problem. Problem is I`m taking my 2 grands and a great niece, ages 7,5,& 3, pray that I survive that !

Hal,
Last fall we had our 2 year old niece at Carson and Barnes and her mother said she will not last the whole show.
Heck she enjoyed it all and her and her mother got there first elephant ride. They had the best time ever at the circus.
The onely trouble was the 2 year old called the elephant a horsee, ha ha.
You will survive as kids love a circus.

Seeing your comment about the

"good" wardrobe reminds me of

a story about Vander Barbette

visiting with a peformer and

going through some costumes

when a few ratty garments were

referred to as "rainy day"

Barbette replied that "It

could NEVER rain that hard"

I've gotten some mileage out

of that quote

Harry,
My grand-daughter saw her first show which was B&C. My son figured she would last a half hour. He said she watched with her mouth open for the whole show and then asked if she could see it again.
