Bringing Up Baby #10

Using a convenient chair, Cary Grant comes to Katharine’s rescue.

Now considered a masterpiece, BRINGING UP BABY was not a commercial success when it was first released. Katharine Hepburn (who was one of the film’s investors) bought back her contract from the studio, which was probably only too glad to sell it to her since she was then considered box office poison. Even Cary Grant had doubts as to whether or not he would ever become a major star. In 2007, the American Film Institute rated it as #88 in the 100 greatest movies of all times. Today, 72 years after it’s release, Miss Hepburn’s estate continues to collect royalties on it.

I had heard that Director Howard Hawks brought in character actor Walter Catlett (the Sheriff) specifically to teach Miss Hepburn the art of the "double take".
