Quite an evening! This annual event has come a long way in the 17 years since Barbara and I received this award.
Highlights were Bill Powell's outstanding film depicting his career detailing the trials, tribulations and eventual rewards with the Greatest Show on Earth.
Photos on the giant screen of Jackie LeClaire doing his aerial act on the Ringling Show in drag, as well as shots of he and Cornel Wilde in identical wardrobe while he was doubling for the DeMille movie.
An incredible film of Clyde Beatty working a mixed act in what appeared to be the Peru Winter Quarters, followed by Johnny Pugh giving insight into his personal association with Mr. Beatty.
Col. Herriott stole the show however relating a story from his days with Beatty-Cole. It dealt with a local Committee President who after seeing the wheeling and dealing on the front door and concession operation was convinced that the Sponsor was getting cheated. He was steered to Roger Boyd who after getting yelled at and threatened finally said , "Why don't you go screw yourself? (word deleted). He then managed to find the manager's trailer and after pounding on the door was confronted by an awakened Frank Orman. "Your Ringmaster just told me to go screw myself! Orman replied, What do you need from me.....Directions? |

Indeed it was a lovely evening... and so many GREAT...MEMORIES...
sincerely Mireille...
Why is there no mention of Chuck Sidlow? He emceed both the Ring of Fame and Circus Celebrity . He did a great job at both and I feel he needs to be mentioned.
I was told that after after these two appearances plus the front cover of Sarasota Magazine, any further mention might make Mr. Sidlow completely out of control.
Roger certainly had a way with
words and Frank could be pretty
ornry when he put his mind to it
Chuckles has done a great job
in these presentations and he is
about to get another star turn
in the current Circus Sarasota
soon to open on 17th Street
Frank could be a real bastard, but he was also a very great conversationalist when he was in a good mood and he kept the show moving and made a good profit.
Roger was Roger and he will always be remembered by me for his sideshow anouncement for the blow-off. If they needed more time, Roger could name almost every major sideshow attraction that had ever been on the road and end it with the wonder worker, George Dickle.

I can still recite verbatim all
the different pitches he made as
I had the opportunity to be the
"offstage" announcer on a few
occasions when Roger was sick
Many folks may remember that
George Dickel was his favorite
Tennessee sipping whiskey
It was a great evening. Kudos to the Circus Celebrity selection committee, Debbie Walk and all of the Ringling Museum staff for a truly classy event.

My Great Grandfather was Frank Orman and it was so neat to read the story and the comments. It good to see people still talk about him. I have gift of Gab and a bit of BS so I'm guessing this is from my Great Grandfather Frank Orman xoxo
