I had a beef with Al Dobritch over the funds from the previous Sullivan appearance so Louie Stern decided not to bother with it any more. We had just moved into the building in Chattanooga when Louie got a frantic call from the Sullivan people saying the replacement elephant they had hired wasn't working out. After a lot of conversation they decided to fly Barbara and Ben up to New York and "Opal" would driven up and back alone in the bull truck. Meantime I worked the act without her but "Anna May" aptly filled the void. The only catch was, in order to pull this off, the Potentate had to be included in the deal. Barbara later said he came prepared with a 12 page speech but was relegated to being briefly spotted waving from the audience. |
