John Goodall Dear John: Your message shows the male Indian rhino Kanakbala (or Billy). He was captured in the Kaziranga reserve, Assam by the animal catcher, dealer, all round adventurer, epicure and word famous chef Peter Ryhiner, a native of Switzerland. Ryhiner visited me here in Atlanta in 1963. What a character, sadly now gone. Some Swiss producers made a documentary about Peter, and I appeared therein. So too did his protege, John Roth, Zoo Atlanta's first professional director. He is a native Swiss like Pief. Ryhiner actually caught two Indians, male (this one) and female, which he delivered to the Philadelphia zoo in 1953 (F) and 1955 (M), respectively. He did the same for the Basel zoo in Switzerland, male in 1951 and female in 1952. Kanakbala (Billy) was one of the longest lived Indian rhinos ever, logged more than 40 years in Philly. Plus, he was a fine breeder. So too were the pair Ryhiner sent to Basel. In fact in 1956 they produced the first viable Indian rhino ever born in Europe or America. Here is a photo of Ryhiner and his wife in Kaziranga looking for the rhinos - - |
