From Jerry Digney #1

Sullivan_book, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

as some of our clients were asked to be a part of a panel discussion next month here in Los Angeles, i wanted to alert everyone to a new book on TV impresario Ed Sullivan titled, "Right Here on Our Stage, Tonight!" by former San Francisco columnist Gerald Nachman. Great read and of course many many circus acts appeared on Sullivan's stage, including the Besalou Elephants and of course Barbara, to name a few!. If i get a chance i'll have a scan made of the elephant act (a two act) that's pictured in the book.

Also do not forget when the great Clyde Beatty appeared on the Sullivan show in a square cage and the cats were not used to this.
I remember he was having trouble getting them back in there cages and they closed the curtain and Ed went into the audience and interviewed some one to kill time.
You never heard so much lion roaring in all you life and I think Ed was really scared.

And don't forget the great Vicky Unus (La Toria) who appeared on Ed's show in 1963.

According to the book A THOUSAND SUNDAYS, about the Sullivan show, Clyde Beatty made 4 appearances. The one Harry refers to occured in 1957, and was on a Sullivan retrospective hosted by Burt Reynolds, who correctly pronounced the name as BAY-tee.

While we giving credit, let us not forget the Sunday night after Ringling had lost the Big Top, in '56. Many RB acts who had quit rather than cross union picket lines, eagerly appeared for Sullivan, and Ed, long a member of AGVA, SAG and AFTRA, saluted AGVA's Jackie Bright as having won "a great war with that circus." Remember that?

Buckles,

Can tell a few stories about the Ed Sullivan show...with Ringling acts cut at the last minute because Sammy Davis Jr. decided to sing another song.

Got quite a few acts on the show but the thing was... you never knew. It was live TV. If the big stars decided to do another number, they did.

Josip Marcan also appeared on Sullivan,
turbaned and bare chested; Professor Keller also appeared on Sullivan (attired quite differently from Marcan)

To... Roger Smith and Mike Naughton

Re: Pronunciation of Beatty.

I grew-up hearing it pronounced, as Roger mentions he feels Bert Reynolds correctly prounces it as "BAY-tee".

Yet.. on this video segment I taped at the Clyde Beatty - Cole Bros in 1991 in the Shea Stadium parking lot here in NYC - John Kennedy Kane (which Mike kindly corrected from my thinking it was Jimmy James) - very clearly pronounces it at "BEE-tee".

Help!!! Please..
Thanks... KLS

I once heard actress Shirley McLaine say in an interview that she changed her name because so many people pronounced, Beatty differently.
Her brother Warren didn't seem to have that problem.

Jimmy James and circus fan extraordinaire, Al House always pronounced it "BAY-tee".

You can hear clips of Jimmy James announcements from the 99 show on the Showfolks of Sarasota web site:
